What is hyperpigmentation ?

Hyperpigmentation presents as dark patches of skin where there’s been an increased production of melanin – the pigment that gives skin its colour. As well as appearing on the face, hyperpigmentation can be found on all areas of the body, including the hands, knees, décolletage, back, stomach and intimate area.

What are the different forms of hyperpigmentation and how are they caused ?

There are three main types of hyperpigmentation:

  • Sun spots: also known as liver spots, age spots or solar lentigines, sun spots are caused by excessive sun exposure
  • Melasma: often referred to as ‘the mask of pregnancy’, melasma occurs as a result of hormonal changes particularly during pregnancy
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH): this forms following injury or inflammation to the skin, with one of the main causes being acne

How is hyperpigmentation treated at Nish Clinic ?

There are several treatment options for hyperpigmentation at our clinic. These include:

  • Skincare: we will recommend a tailored regime using clinically-proven medical-grade products to help reduce hyperpigmentation – daily use of SPF is particularly important
  • Chemical peels: by applying active ingredients from our impressive cosmelan or other ranges, we can effectively ‘peel’ the top layer of skin affected by hyperpigmentation to reveal a more evenly toned appearance underneath
  • Microneedling: using our impressive SkinPen Precision device, we can quickly and effectively microneedle the skin, creating micro-injuries which will induce collagen production and wound healing, which improves the appearance hyperpigmentation
  • Laser: when we heat the affected area with our HALO Sciton laser, it will shatter the excessive pigment to improve your skin tone without causing harm to the surrounding areas

Sometimes a combination of one or more of these treatments will be recommended. We will tailor our approach to your needs and budget.

Are there any side effects or complications associated with hyperpigmentation treatment ?

The treatments we offer are proven to be safe and effective but, as with any procedure, you may experience some mild side effects that will depend on the treatment you undergo. Our team will explain everything you can expect, and any potential complications that may occur, during a detailed and personalised consultation.

What results can you expect ?

Results depend on the severity of your hyperpigmentation and the type of treatment you undergo. It’s important to remember that the condition can reoccur as a result of increased age, sun exposure, injury or hormonal changes. That’s why we always recommend undergoing a course of treatment and having regular maintenance procedures for ongoing results.
