What causes scars?

Scars appear as part of the body’s natural healing process. They can appear in many forms and as a result of infections, surgery, tissue inflammation or injury.

What are the different types of scars?

  • Raised scars – these scars are usually firm and can be itchy or painful.
  • Depressed scars – sitting below the surface of the skin, these scars may look pitted or sunken.
  • Flat scars – these scars are reddish or pink and slightly raised. They can be itchy or painful.
  • Contracture scars – these scars are usually caused by burns and can be thicker and tighter than the skin, causing limited movement.
  • Keloid scars – these are different to raised scars and can grow larger than the original wound. Keloid scarring are the result of an aggressive healing process.
  • Hypertrophic scars – thick and raised, these scars can be caused by an overproduction of collagen, following a trauma to the skin.
  • Atrophic scars – these scars can look like tiny holes or enlarged pores. They can be a result of skin conditions such as chickenpox, acne or a mole removal.
